Red Flags

The aged electric-hybrid bus deposited the explorers at Coogee Beach. The relic struck Cross as an overly complicated machine for a job that a fully electric bus could do. Sydney was behind the times in upgrading its public transportation.

Cross drank in a view of the vast stretch of sand. He saw a group of shirtless Bruces tossing a rugby ball in an awkward underhanded motion. They swung both arms between their legs in a ready position squat and hurled an oblong ball that looked to Cross like a blunt football in a semi-spiral at each other. Nearby, two teams of Sheilas in bikinis stood off against each other on either side of a nearby volleyball net. Cross remarked that all the men and women in Australia seemed fit for a Sports Illustrated magazine. Everyone was attractive here. Alyne was no exception. She held her tailored suit coat under her arm, revealing a short-sleeved tight-fitting undershirt. Cross held his sports coat over his shoulder. It was hot, but a cool breeze was blowing in from over the ocean.

“Not a bad day at the office.” Cross stated, “and we didn’t have to kickbox our way out of that meeting to get here. So what’s your story?”

“My part-time job at Uni before Rocket Sci was a trainer at a kickboxing gym.” Alyne started.

“Impressive. You’re a kickboxing instructor?” Cross asked.

“Was. Not anymore. I had a client who refused to pay for a week’s worth of lessons. He was a traditional boxer and wasn’t picking up on the kickboxing technique; he said it was my fault and demanded another lesson. He blocked the door. I had to put him down just to get out.”

“You kicked him in the shins?”

“Naw, Yeah, in the face!”

“Extreme Australia,” Cross responded.

“Your turn,” Alyne said, “What kind of mystery did you solve in London, Dr. Watson? Any truth to what you mentioned in Dubai?”

“Ok, I thought I was Sherlock?”

“You have to tell the story, so you’re Watson now. There’s time while we walk to Bondi. It’s the most famous ocean walk in all of Straya. How’s about dinner in Bondi? Roo burgers!” Alyne led the pair to the path that started at the beach's north end. As they left the sandy horseshoe of Coogee, the coastal terrain dramatically changed. The pathway was carved from wind-blown rock. Colorful layers of strata teased untold stories locked in the sediment. Waves crashed below them, slowly eroding the shoreline with the relentless rhythmic cadence, slowly revealing the history of eras gone by. The landscape was beautiful.

“Ok, where to start….” Cross stated out loud, more for himself than for Alyne. He thought he could tell the story short of revealing the Top Secret element. In London, Cross had uncovered that a corporation called EV3 has been building a secretive energy source for over three decades. They called it the ARCELOR. He didn’t have to reveal what he discovered, but he could describe how.

“You said you had to escape a dungeon and evade the clutches of an evil corporate mastermind.
